We recently ran an alternative team building event, where we tied in a team’s Myers-Briggs personality profiles with our outdoor team activities. And the feedback from the event speaks for itself. Keep reading to find out more.
What is Myers-Briggs?
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality test. It helps individuals to better understand their preferences, how they perceive the world and how they make decisions.
The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives – myersbriggs.org
In a work context, it helps individuals to better understand their own and their colleague’s preferences and behaviour. And so Myers-Briggs can be a useful tool for team building.
Planning Myers-Briggs within a team
A team of 11 people from Macmillan Cancer Support came to us for a team building event. And we worked with their MBTI facilitator to plan the event.
The team completed their MBTI self-assessments and met 1-2-1 with the facilitator. This was so that they could interpret and understand their individual result. Leading up to the event, we liaised with the MBTI facilitator to plan our activities. We also divided the team into sub-teams in advance. This was to ensure that we carried through the Myers-Briggs session in to our outdoor team building activities.
Structure of the team building event
The team came together for a morning MBTI session. This focused on understanding their individual and team preferences. And what this meant in a day-to-day work context.
Then the team came to us in the afternoon for their
For the activities, we divided the team up based on their MBTI profile. Sometimes grouping people with a similar profile. And for other activities, we grouped people together with opposite profiles. Then after each activity, the MBTI facilitator did a short de-brief. This was to ask how it went and what they learnt about each other.
Activities were carefully considered so that it didn’t feel too forced or contrived. The focus remained on trying something new and having fun. But at the same time, really getting to know each other and taking some time for reflection and reinforcing the morning’s session.
Feedback
Feedback from the day was very positive. As you can see below from reviews we received about the day.
